CLIMATE CHANGE

Since the beginning of industrialization more than 200 years ago, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has increased significantly - man is increasing the natural greenhouse effect, the earth is warming. This leads to climate change.

Experts think "that if global warming is limited to 2 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial value (mean 1850 - 1879), a dangerous disturbance of the climate system by humans can just about be avoided." For this, "emissions would have to decrease by 25% by 2030 compared to 2010"; and drop to zero by 2070.

OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Anyone who does one of the various tests to determine their CO2 footprint on the Internet will come to the following conclusion:

  • we live with too few people in too large and possibly too many houses or apartments (here the heating costs in particular have an impact)

  • we drive the wrong and possibly too many cars and use public transport too seldom or not at all

  • every single flight also messes up our ecological balance sheet

  • we eat wrong (e.g. too meaty) and

  • we consume too much (clothes, electrical appliances, furniture, etc.)

GROWTH OF POPULATION

In 1960 there were around 3 billion people on earth. In the year 2000 it was already more than 6 billion, by the end of 2021 it will be 8 billion and by 2040 it is expected that there will be 9 billion inhabitants of our planet.

The world's population is growing by a good 82 million people every year.

Population growth is mainly taking place in poorer countries.

CO2 EMISSIONS

The average German emits around 11 tons of CO2 per year with his consumption; in the USA, the figure is as high as 16 tons. According to a study, not having just one child results in CO2 savings of 58.6 tons per year. How can that be? The CO2 emissions of children and grandchildren up to the year 2400 are also taken into account.

(Source: Quarks.de/environment/climate change)

In fact, each person is only allowed to produce 2 tons of CO2 per year in order not to increase the greenhouse effect and to protect the climate.

EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Our planet's resources are limited. Our ongoing pursuit of limitless growth, greater prosperity and "progress" has led us to the dangerous climate change we are currently observing:

  • extreme weather events are increasing (heat waves + precipitation)

  • plant and animal species are threatened with extinction

  • our forests are dying

what the world will look like tomorrow.
